Remember me?

Apologies for the lengthy gap between website updates. The biggest news to report is that my first YA novel, Best Left Forgotten, is out now. This is the story of Lauren, a 16-year-old girl who develops perfect memory recall. Sounds like a brilliant ability, doesn’t it? Of course, you know what they say about some thing being too good to be true…

The other significant update is that teaching resources are FINALLY available for The Crazy Christmas Job Swap, just in time for Christmas (am I allowed to mention the C word yet?) I hope they’re of use.

That’s all for now. I’ll try and not leave it two years before the next update!

Putting the band back together

Readers of The Supervillain Next Door will know that the final chapter of the book hinted at tough times ahead for our eclectic band of heroes. I’m so glad to announce that the sequel, World’s Most Wanted, is out now. Picking up a few weeks after the events of the first book, the stakes have never been higher as Steve and his friends confront the shocking secrets of Bridgeton’s past!

It has been a real pleasure to revisit some of my favourite characters, and in particular to give characters such as Jill and Peter more of a focus. Peter’s strange transformation was one of my favourite moments in the first book, and this time round he has a whole new set of problems to deal with!

If you were intrigued by the glimpses of Bridgeton’s superheroic past, this book reveals the full story of the heroes’ tragic rise and fall. Nothing will ever be the same…

The future is now

Fasten your seatbelts and get ready for a time-twisting, heart breaking, pulse pounding space adventure! My latest book, A Time for Heroes, is out now! (A little later than promised, but when you’re writing about time travel strange things tend to happen to the space-time continuum).

Danny King finds himself taken 1,000 years into the future, but this is no holiday. Danny’s task is to save the inhabitants of Solus 4 from a group of marauding space pirates.

There’s just one tiny little problem… Danny is an ordinary ten-year-old boy.

Why has Danny been brought to the future? Can he live up to his heroic reputation? And why do his allies look so familiar? All will be revealed in the pages of A Time for Heroes, out now!

The Name Game

It’s been a long time coming, but I finally have a title for my upcoming release. Deciding on a title is, for me, the most difficult part of the entire writing process, so I’m delighted (and very relieved) that it’s done.

Which sounds like a good excuse for a competition!

The title of my book is contained within the following anagram: THEMOARRISEEOF

Unscramble it and one lucky person will receive a signed copy of the book when it’s released later in the year.

Good luck!

Choose a side!

I’m so happy to announce that my new book, The Crazy Christmas Job Swap, is now available to buy. It features Santa and the Tooth Fairy, who both get caught up in a gift-giving contest that gets TOTALLY out of control. They eventually decide that there’s only one way to really decide who works the hardest. Swap jobs…

One of the things that most excited me about this story was the fact that I know the Tooth Fairy and Santa are loved by millions over the world, with every child having their personal favourite. I hope that this book sparks a lot of discussion about who works hardest, and perhaps might make some readers change their minds…

If you read the book I would love to hear from you. Are you Team Santa? Are you Team Tooth Fairy? Do you like them both? Let me know your thoughts 🙂

School visits

We’re four weeks into the school holidays and while my boys may not be missing school, I certainly am! That’s because one of my favourite parts of releasing The Supervillain Next Door has been visiting schools.

I’ve visited small schools and big ones, talked to packed assemblies and small classes, and it has been the most tremendous fun. Writing a novel can sometimes be a lonely experience when it’s just you and your laptop, so it’s great to get out there and meet readers.

One of my favourite parts of any school visit is the q+a session at the end – often because I never know what sort of questions to expect. I’ve been asked about influences, writing habits and whether I’m as rich as David Walliams (sadly,no!), and have hopefully managed to answer most questions put to me.

I can’t wait until the school visits start up again in the new academic year, and I’m also excited about what I have planned for visits promoting my second book. No spoilers 🙂

Choosing favourites

The Supervillain Next Door has been out for a few weeks now and it’s been great to hear that readers are enjoying it. One part of the publicity process that I’ve really enjoyed is visiting schools to talk about the book and the writing process. During one visit, one of the children asked me a question that made me think: who was my favourite character?

I’d love to say that I instantly launched into a lengthy prepared answer, but in reality it’s a REALLY tough question to answer – every character in the book was great fun to write, or has a moment that makes me smile. The natural answer might have been to say Steve – after all, he’s the main character and the one who has the difficult task of saving the day.

But when I thought about it some more, I realised that while Steve is great, I had a soft spot for another character: his best friend, Peter. He may not be responsible for saving the day, but still plays a vital role in supporting Steve and being there for him. He’s loyal, dependable and kind, and no matter how scared he might be, he always tries to support his friend. He also features in my favourite section of the book, where his and Steve’s exploration of Mr Hunter’s basement leads to a most unexpected transformation…

So that’s my pick – who would you choose? Leave a comment and let me know!

How to tell if your neighbour is a supervillain

Do you have a nasty neighbour? Do they steal your toys, shout at you and take great delight in ruining your day?

If so, your neighbour could be… a supervillain!

But how to find out for sure? The following tips should help you discover whether your neighbour is a genuine supervillain or just a grumpy old person.

  1. Listen carefully to your neighbour’s laugh. Normal people make a sound such as ‘Ha Ha’ or ‘Tee Hee’. Supervillains sound something like this: “BWAH HA HA HA HA!!!
  2. Do they get incredibly annoyed at little things? If their newspaper was late in being delivered, a normal person might phone the paper shop. A supervillain would kidnap the paperboy and blow up the paper shop, or at the very least boobytrap their letterbox. .
  3. Do they wear a labcoat? Perhaps they’ve got a perfectly innocent hobby, or just wear it for cooking dinner. Chances are, though, that your neighbour sporting a labcoat around the house means that you’re living next to a mad scientist. Watch out for power surges and strange noises in the middle of the night.
  4. Do they have advanced technology? A normal neighbour might have lawnmowers, vacuum cleaners, and maybe some voice activated lights if they’re pushing the boat out. A supervillain would have robot slaves, a rocketship in the garage, and motion sensors on the front lawn.

If your neighbour falls into more than one of these categories, there’s a very good chance that they’re a supervillain. Clear your diary as there’s a strong possibility you’ll be getting kidnapped, brainwashed, or turned into something unpleasant.

Good luck!
